Her father is a daily wager, her mother a house help, but 15-year-old Ashmita is already a champion.

Ashmita has represented India at the world school games in Turkey and is billed by many in Agartala’s gymnastic fraternity as the next Dipa Karmakar.

“If she continues to train the way she is doing, she will not become Dipa but someone much better in the game.” – Dipa Karmakar

Ashmita trains in the same Vivekananda Byamaghar where Dipa made her first foray into gymnastics. Soma Nandy, who was initially Dipa’s coach and now trains Ashmita, says: “For a good gymnast, it is important to have a good strength, speed, and flexibility. Ashmita has all the three qualities. That’s why her performance is good and better than other children.”

But unfortunately, her parents weren’t in the position to provide her the proper nutrition. That’s when CNN-News18 started a campaign with us to help Ashmita raise funds for her training. It was amazing to see how people from all over India came out to support Ashmita. They ended up raising over 11 lakhs in 2 days.Ashmita
